This Week in the MBSLA

It was a busy week in the MBSLA North. There were also a couple of other big games in the MBSLA that might provide a glimpse into the relative strength of a couple of teams.

Delano versus St. Louis Park
In the MBSLA North Brainerd knocked off Grand Rapids 8-5 on Thursday April, 28.  Also on Thursday in the MBSLA Delano proved they're for real in 2011 knocking off last years state champion St. Louis Park 12-10.

On Saturday Grand Rapids lost to a very good MontiQuois team 19-0.  The previous day, MontiQuois showed how good they can be with a solid 7-1 victory over St. Paul.  Also on Saturday, in their first game of the season (their earlier games against Tartan and St. Paul North were canceled), Duluth-Superior knocked off White Bear Lake 7-2.  Brainerd also played White Bear Lake on Saturday, beating them 8-5.  In the final game of the night, Duluth beat Brainerd 9-1.  With this win over a good Brainerd team, Duluth takes its first step towards cementing themselves as the favorite in the MBSLA North.  Tomorrows Duluth/St. Cloud North game will be the next telling game in the MBSLA North.  Also Saturday Fargo lost to North St. Paul 17-9..

There are more MBSLA North games on tap tomorrow including Grand Rapids taking on St. Cloud North at 11:00 a.m., Duluth taking on St. Cloud North at 3:00 p.m. and Brainerd taking on St. Cloud North at 5:30 p.m. in games that could help determine who will be the MBSLA North favorite.  We anticipate St. Cloud North being fairly tired after their game against Brainerd.  Other Sunday games include Fargo against St. Louis Park and Tartan.  Also in the MBSLA, the game pitting state runner-up Orono against Delano should be a good one.

2011 Northern Minnesota Lacrosse Season Preview: St. Cloud North

High School: St. Cloud North (Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Cloud Apollo)

Coaches:
Head Coach- Tyler Safranek, 2 years at St. Cloud North
Defensive Coach- Tyler Farrell, 2 years at St. Cloud North
Offensive Coach- Cody Otte, 2 years at St.Cloud North

Last Year's Record: 7-7

Returning Starters/Key Returning Players: 8 returning starters including all 3 starting attack from last season and goalkeeper Alex Halupczok

Key Losses:  Brandon Gabbert Defensive Captain

Big Games/Games to See:  Knights vs. Duluth on May 1st

Season Outlook:  St. Cloud North will be looking at their overall team defense and explosive attackmen to lead them through the season in 2011.  The Knights are presently 1-0 in the MBSLA North with a win over Fargo and 1-2 overall with their losses coming to two of the top MBSLA programs in the state - Delano and St. Paul.  Coach Safranek believes, "We have a much deeper roster this year with plenty of athletes.  It's now up to myself and the rest of the coaching staff to find ways to utilize our talents and find ways to get our newcomers up to speed quickly."  How well the Knights coaches can do that will play a big factor in the success of their 2011 season.  Coach Safranek has this to say about his team in 2011, "So far, we've seen dramatic improvement all the way around.  I like to think we are kind of like the Duke of the MBSLA: we may lay a few eggs at the start of the season, but once we find our rhythm and nail down the fundamentals we can play with anyone.  To say that I'm excited to see what this team is capable of is an understatement!"  With a playoff appearance last season and a tough 1-0 first round playoff loss to previously undefeated St. Paul to open the playoffs, St. Cloud looks to be a favorite in the MBSLA North with hopes of making it back to the dance and advancing past the first round in 2011.

Instructional Video of the Week: Shooting on the Run Paul Rabil Highlights

Some video highlights of Paul Rabil shooting on the run.  Rabil is arguably the best on-the-run shooter in the game of lacrosse.  Watching him shoot on the run in slow motion, freeze frame and from different angles is very instructional.

Weather Wreaking Havoc on the 2011 Lacrosse Season

playing in snow
The weather gods have not been kind to our Minnesota lacrosse season in 2011.  Several games have been canceled, practices have been canceled and games have been played in snow, high winds and driving rain.  Check out the nasty weather Fargo had in their first lacrosse game ever in the photo from the preview below.  Nasty!  Lacrosse is a sport that can be played in any weather condition, but the conditions we've had so far this season have been ridiculous.  Hopefully teams will make up their canceled games and practices can be added.  Feel free to comment on this post and give us your Minnesota lacrosse nasty 2011 weather story.  Here's to good weather for the remainder of the season!

Number of Returning Starters/Key Returning Players:

On last years tournament team that played in the Grand Rapids Tournament, 9 players return including sophomore Tanner Lindstrom, team co-captain freshman Nicholas Horski,  team co-captain junior Aaron Monson, freshman Jimmy Evenson, 8th grader Daniel Kasper, team co-captain sophomore Joe Noah, freshman Ben Noah, sophomore Dan Evenson and sophomore Gunnar Bossart.

Big Games/Games to See:  The game against Brainerd in Fargo on 22 April (already played with Brainerd taking the win).  It will be the first ever game for Fargo in the first boys high school varsity game in North Dakota. This could be the first meeting in a budding rivalry.

Season Outlook
:

action from Fargo's first lacrosse game against Brainerd
The Fargo Warriors believe that their team strength this year will be Optimism.  The brand new MBSLA team has sparked a lot of excitement about lacrosse in the Fargo area and the team is looking forward to competing against other MBSLA teams.

Many of the teams players learned the game in Fargo through club recreational play and Park District clinics consisting primarily of camps and inter-city scrimmages.  The youth lacrosse program in Fargo has been in existence since 2006.

Amazingly, less than 4 months ago, the team had no helmets, no uniforms, no money, no coaches, no practice field and a roster of 9 players.  They were entered in the MBSLA North Conference for 2011 and everything had to come together quickly.  It did.

Today Fargo has a roster of 24 with everything they were lacking in January now in place including brand new Cascade Pro7 helmets for every player compliments of a generous donation from Scheels Sporting Goods.  Their new coaches, Coach Fairbanks and Coach Hohloch come to the team after lacrosse careers at Minnesota State Moorhead.

Much of the success organizing the current Fargo lacrosse team comes from the efforts of team president Matt Noah, whose two sons play on the team after playing as 5/6 graders in Chaska and Minnetonka.  In addition to the helmets, Scheels Sporting Goods provided the team with a donation that helped to make the season a reality.

Coaches Fairbanks and Hohloch plan to take the season one day at a time.  Coach Fairbanks says, "Starting the season with only 9 players who have game experience we look to play hard and grow as a team as the season progresses with the end of the season goal being a trip to the state tournament."  In addition to the team goals, Coach Fairbanks hopes to, "spread the lacrosse word through the area in hopes of continued support from the Fargo-Moorhead community in seasons to follow and the continued expansion of lacrosse in the midwest."  Definitely a great start for a Fargo lacrosse team that looks to be in good hands and primed to grow in the coming years.

St. Cloud Tech Now 3-2 in First MSHSL Season

St. Cloud Tech, the "other" northern Minnesota team is now 3-2 on the young 2011 season.  The Tigers are finding some success in their first season as a sanctioned MSHSL Varsity sport.  Their three wins have come against Forest Lake, Holy Family and Buffalo (another team in its first sanctioned year), with losses to Coon Rapids and Roseville.

Leading the way in scoring for the Tigers has been junior attackman Zach Affeldt with 15 goals and 18 points.  Junior goalie Alex Ampe has posted a nice .818 save percentage.

The following article on the newly sanctioned St. Cloud Tech lacrosse team is from the St. Cloud Times:

One game into its inaugural season as a high school league sanctioned activity, St. Cloud Tech/Cathedral has caught the eye of the boys lacrosse world.

“I think we’re going to turn some heads in the high school league,” Tech/Cathedral head coach Tyler Hein said.

The team opened the season this week with a 15-2 win over Forest Lake. It played Thursday at Coon Rapids and has a home game against Holy Family Catholic at 6:30 p.m. today at Oak Hill Community School.

“I think the win (Tuesday) night put St. Cloud lacrosse on the map as a serious varsity sport,” said senior midfielder Merek Regan. “It (getting high school sanctioning) was really important.  “Last year, we were just a club team and no one took us seriously.”

The team got its sanctioning last spring and it has helped in numerous ways, said Hein, the 27-year-old coach who works for a workers’ compensation insurance company in the St. Cloud area.

Little Chargers Win First Two of the Season

The Duluth-Superior 7/8 grade lacrosse team picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday at the Delano, MN lacrosse jamboree.  The young Chargers faced Elk River in game one.  After a slow first half the Chargers poured it on in the second half to win the game 10-3.  The young Chargers did a nice job controlling the ball on the offensive side of the field for much of the game.

In game two, the Chargers faced St. Michael-Albertville.  After jumping out to an early lead, the young St. Michael-Albertville team fought back to tie it up 4-4 late in the game.  A late goal by the Chargers and the defense held with a man down to close the game out with a 5-4 win.

The 7/8 Duluth-Superior Chargers next games will take place next weekend in Sartell, MN where they'll face St. Cloud and MontiQuois 2.

*FULL DISCLOSURE - It should be noted that the author of this blog has a vested interest in the 7/8 Chargers lacrosse team as his son plays on this team.  We'll certainly try to be as impartial as possible throughout the season and we will provide as much coverage to other northern Minnesota lacrosse teams as we possibly can.  While the blog may be somewhat Duluth-centric since we live here, we will post anything - highlights, game recaps, statistics, scores, for all northern Minnesota teams as long as the information is provided.  We're excited for all northern lacrosse teams and look forward to seeing all of the teams grow and improve.

Tips for Shooting on the Run

Shooting on the Run
tips from Mark Millon, Jay Jalbert and others

Mechanics

"I remember when I first started to force myself to do it lefty, it was just a really awkward thing. You're running, and you have to keep your whole upper body still, and still have torque," Jalbert says. "And I remember just fighting through that. It was a really difficult thing."

Remember the two Ts: torso and torque.

Paul Rabil - one of the best ever shooting on the run
As opposed to a stationary shot, in which you can plant your feet and release it head-on, shooting on the run requires less of your legs to generate shot power. Most of it will come from your arms and midsection. Your legs, however, do generate the momentum, which is then converted by your upper body into shot power.

Approaching the cage as a righty, you should line up your shot four steps in advance. Jalbert calls it, simply, a run dodge. Draw your defender on your left hip while sweeping right. Take your first three steps down the alley -- left, right, left -- to get him there.

Then, on your fourth step, your right foot steps over your release point.

Allow your feet about a millisecond delay for your upper body to initiate shooting motion. Then whip your torso in a right-to-left motion toward the cage, and follow through with your arms and wrists as you would naturally.

(Approaching as a lefty, use the reverse footwork.)

Hand Position and Arm Angle

Before that fourth step, your hands should already be in a position to shoot.

As with any shot, your top hand should not be too close to the throat of the stick, because you will wind up pushing the ball.

But more so with shooting on the run, your top hand should not be too low, either. A lot of the whip is already generated by the torso-torque mechanic. Positioning your hands too low on the stick not only leaves you susceptible to a trail check, but it also decreases accuracy. A shot on the run is already less accurate than a stationary shot.

When you step over the release point with that fourth step, your hands should extend away from your body, elbows up, and ready to follow through on the torque created by your upper body.

Also, keep the stick "light in your hands," Jalbert advises. "A lot of real young players, they have that kung-fu grip," he says. "It should be tender."

As for arm angles, shooting on the run lends itself best to sidearm and overhand approaches. Choose the angle according to your position on the field.  Overhand shooting is more accurate on the run and many top players recommend an overhand shot when shooting on the run to improve accuracy.

However, if you're dodging across the goal, go ahead and shoot sidearm. This gives you a better angle and widens your options of where to shoot on the cage.

If you're coming down either alley, an overhand shot works best.

'Get Small'

Think of a spring-loaded gun. "My body gets small before I shoot," Jalbert says.

The more tightly wound your torso is upon your release, the more power you'll get on your shot. It means tightening up your abdomen by contorting your upper body and hips, and releasing that energy through your arms and wrists.

Lean into the goal when shooting to generate this effect.

Step over your release point with your outside foot, delay, and whip your torso around for the greatest strength on your running shot.  You can think of it like a golfers swing or leading with your hips in a baseball swing.

Drills and Workouts

Your body wants to stop. It wants to stop and shoot. So practice everything in motion, without a ball, even.

Jalbert had an apple orchard in his backyard growing up. There were six trees in a row. To get used to shooting on the run, when he was younger, he would dodge each tree in succession, and practice getting his hands out into shooting position after each tree.

The same effect could be achieved with any row of obstacles. The important thing is that you never stop moving your feet.

As for developing muscles used while shooting on the run, use workouts for strengthening your rotational core.

More tips for shooting on the run:

Shooting on the run may be the hardest skill to learn in lacrosse and will require tons of practice. You are going to be shooting on the run a lot. When you are practicing, spend as much time as you can focusing on shooting on the run. Any time your on a goal practicing your shot (hopefully all the time) spend 85%-90% of the time running full speed and shooting.  Don't worry if you miss the goal badly the first few hundred times.

There are a few keys to scoring from outside.

Try to be deceptive. Try to hide your stick behind your body until the last second.  You are going to have the defensive players from the opposing team all over you when you have the ball, so you need to learn to be deceptive.

Paul Rabil shooting on the run
Shoot with the proper technique. Hands and elbows high and away from your body, hands 12 inches apart close to the bottom of your handle, turn your shoulders and hips and uncork like a golfer.  Your power will come from a big hip and shoulder turn while cradling your stick behind your body.  Just as your ready to release your shot uncork your body in the direction of the target.

Don’t be afraid to take bounce shots.  They can provide an additional aspect of deception with unpredictable bounces and often find the back of the cage.

Learn to do it with both hands.

This description is for a right handed shot, a left handed shot will be reversed.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE GOAL. Start by moving across the face of the goal from the right side to the left and have your shoulders parallel with the sidelines but as you begin to plant your left foot "show your numbers" to the goal. Begin the shooting motion by planting your left foot so it will face at about the 10 o'clock position, bring your right foot around slightly after so it will end up pointing at the goal. Be sure to have your right foot come around slightly before the stick, this will force you to "coil" your body so you will have more torque in your body which translates to more velocity in your shot. YOU MUST TAKE A WIDE STEP WITH YOUR RIGHT FOOT SO YOU CAN GET ALL OF THE VELOCITY FROM THE TORQUE IN YOU BODY INTO THE SHOT.  Remember, you are moving through the entire process, do not stop to shoot.  If you bring your right foot around properly with all of your body power behind the shot, the follow through should almost spin you completely around. Keep the stick behind your body so the goalie cannot see it, be careful not to "hang the stick". YOU SHOULD HAVE A SORE LOWER BACK AFTER WORKING ON THIS OR YOU ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT. You can practice shooting on the run from any angle on the field. It does not have to be across the face of the goal only.

Again, this is a tough skill even for top players.  It is going to take a considerable amount of practice to master.  Watch some high level lacrosse to see it in action!!

Brainerd Wins First MBSLA North Matchup of the Season Over Fargo

The Fargo Warriors lost their first game in the emerging history of Fargo high school lacrosse 18-2 to Brainerd.  It was the first game ever for the new Fargo lacrosse program and the first MBSLA North matchup of the season.  While the loss was disappointing, it could not dampen the excitement of the first high school lacrosse team in North Dakota.

Brainerd displayed a balanced offensive attack with 11 players scoring a goal. Mitchell Howieson had 3 Goals and 5 Assists for 8 points, Jake Reichenbach had 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points, Jeremy Young scored 4 goals, Keith Haymaker scored a goal and had 3 assists for 4 points, and Zach Brown, Adam Casperson, and Randy Flores each scored a goal and an assist for 2 points each. Also scoring for Brainerd was Josh Garber, Jordan Schmaltz, Cody Gustafson, and Kristian Haymaker.

Kevin Lechner posted a .600 save percentage on the night.

In the second MBSLA North matchup of the season, Fargo came out on the short end again in a 14-2 loss to St. Could North.  Fargo plays next in the Shakopee tournament on May 1.  Brainerd takes the field again on Thursday night in another North Conference game against Grand Rapids at 6:00 p.m.

Instructional Video of the Week: Shooting on the Run

Shooting on the run is critical in lacrosse as the majority of a midfielders or attackmans shots will come off the run.  Midfielders especially have to be adept at shooting on the run as they come off a dodge heading towards the goal.  The following videos do a pretty good job showing good technique for shooting on the run.

Fargo Warriors First Season to Begin Friday

Fargo Warriors Bring Lacrosse to North Dakota

By Fargo Lacrosse Club
When the Fargo Warriors took to the field on April 11th at Ed Clapp Park in Fargo for their first outdoor practice of the season, you could see the excitement in the kids, but there was none prouder or more excited than Fargo Lacrosse Club organizer and team manager Matt Noah.  “Will you look at that!” he declared as a wave of young men took off across the field for a warmup lap.  After years of e-mails, phone calls, recruiting, fundraising, a little coaching, and a lot of selling, his efforts have culminated in the first varsity lacrosse program in North Dakota. “In January the team had no helmets, no uniforms, no money, no coaches, no practice field and a roster of 9 kids but were entered to play in the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association Northern Conference.  Today, the Warriors have a roster of 24 with everything they were lacking in January.”
Fargo Coach Ben Fairbanks

Also taking to the field that evening was first year head coach Ben Fairbanks who is making his varsity coaching debut.  Ben comes to the Fargo Lacrosse Club from Minnesota State University – Moorhead club team where he was team captain for two years.  While in college, Ben kept active in youth lacrosse by helping out with programs organized by the Fargo Lacrosse Club and the Fargo Park District.  Also working with Coach Fairbanks is Zach Hohloch who was also a team mate of Ben’s at MSU-Moorhead.

Fargo will compete in the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association (MBSLA) Varsity North Division this spring along with Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Duluth and St. Cloud-North.  They will also be in a tournament in Shakopee, MN and are hosting their own tournament 14-15 May.  But the game the team is looking most forward to is their season opener at home on Friday, 22 April at 5:30 PM against Brainerd.  Besides the anticipation and jitters of the first game of the season and the first varsity game the club has ever played, it also has the distinction of being the first high school varsity lacrosse game in North Dakota, something the boys are taking very seriously.

This may be the first varsity team to hit the field for the Warriors but it is not the first game action for some of the players.  Last spring, 9 of these boys participated as the Fargo Sioux in the 9/10 grade level at the Grand Rapids, MN tournament.  The MBSLA was very understanding of the situation Fargo was in and allowed players from other teams to pull on Fargo jerseys and play when they were not playing with their teams.  The majority of support came from the Anoka 7th/8th grade team where Fargo was able to get coaching help as well as several players and over the course of the weekend, players from St. Louis Park, Maple Grove, and Duluth also became temporary Fargo team mates.  Throughout the tournament Fargo competed very well and the hometown boys contributed every shift and, most importantly, gained valuable competitive experience.  Fargo ended the tournament 2-2-0 and a third place finish.

The origins of the Fargo Warriors go back to 2006 when the Noah family moved back to Fargo after living in the west and southwestern Minneapolis suburbs of Minnetonka and Chaska where the Noah brothers began playing as 5th and 6th graders.  After returning to Fargo, Matt’s efforts include working with the Fargo Park District to organize clinics and club recreational play events to provide a basic familiarization and outlet for Fargo area kids to be exposed to the sport.

Besides the early experience of the Noah brothers, all the other players have learned the game through the programs offered in Fargo.  The team that takes the field on Friday is made up of players from Fargo, West Fargo, Horace, Moorhead, Dilworth, and East Grand Forks.

Getting the team this far has been helped by a major donation from Scheels in the form of 25 top of the line Cascade helmets to help the team meet league mandated uniform standards as well as an anonymous benefactor that covered the cost of home and away uniforms.  The Fargo Park District has been helpful by finding a park the team can call home for practices and home games.  More work is on the immediate horizon as just three weeks after the opening game, the club is hosting a tournament for high school varsity and junior varsity teams.

So, in this season of firsts, the team is looking to get it’s first conference win which will improve it’s chances of a seed in the MBSLA State Tournament to be held in early June in the Minneapolis metro area.  A state tournament berth would really put a cap on the Warrior’s season of firsts, but it all starts with the first faceoff at around 5:30 PM on Friday.

Bulldogs Lose Shocker to Gophers; Beat Sonoma State

The UMD Bulldogs will now have to win the UMLL Conference tournament for a chance to play in the MCLA National Championship Tournament in Denver after losing in overtime to conference rival University of Minnesota on April 15, 8-7.  It was a miserable night for lacrosse at Griggs Stadium in Duluth with high winds and frigid temperatures.  UMD dropped another close game, losing by 1 goal in overtime to an improving University of Minnesota team.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs found a little redemption, beating a solid Sonoma State (6-6) team 8-2.  The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a disappointing 5-7 record.

UMD will enter the April 29-May 1 UMLL tournament as the #2 seed.  Their first tournament game will be April 30 at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the St. Cloud State/MSU-Mankato game.  The UMLL championship game will take place on Sunday May 1 at 4:30 p.m.

Instructional Video of the Week: Good Shooting Form - Time and Room

The following video does a great job describing and showing good shooting form. It nicely goes though a shot step-by-step and in slow motion describing and showing proper shooting technique and form. Another good thing for new players to watch is how softly Smith receives the pass. He doesn't keep the stick outstretched for long, but "gives" a little as the ball arrives in his stick and he's ready to shoot quickly. This is proper technique that is very clear in slow motion and many young players haven't yet mastered. It's well worth watching for both new players and those who've played the game for a while. We think it's one of the best shooting instructional videos out there. Check it out:

Duluth Area YMCA Youth Lacrosse League - Youth Lacrosse in the North

The Duluth YMCA is going into its third year of youth lacrosse instruction this summer.  The partnership with the UMD Bulldogs lacrosse program, offers this league high level instruction for youth in grades 3 through 6.  UMD players and coaches have been partnering with the YMCA the last two years and provide all of the coaching and instruction.

The league hopes to offer even more in 2011.  With the anticipation of an increase in numbers, the league is planning to offer teams and league competition in addition to the quality instruction.

Open to any kids in grade 3 through 6 in the Duluth area and beyond, growth in the YMCA youth lacrosse league will create a fun and dynamic summer of lacrosse.  Greater numbers will allow for the creation of more teams and more fun games for the kids.  Learning the game at a young age will give kids a head start if they decide they want to keep playing lacrosse in middle school, high school or beyond.

The league runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 7 to August 2.  You can go to the YMCA Website for more information and to register online.  You may also register at the downtown Duluth YMCA.

If you'd like to see what lacrosse is all about, the Duluth YMCA and UMD Bulldogs lacrosse team are also offering a free lacrosse clinic this Saturday April 16 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the downtown Duluth YMCA.  The UMD lacrosse team will be providing the instruction and it will be a great introductory opportunity for new players and refresher for returning players.  The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades 2 through 6.

2011 Northern Minnesota Lacrosse Season Preview - Grand Rapids Thuderhawks

High School:  Grand Rapids

Coaches
Brad Gallop - 2nd year at Grand Rapids.

Last Year's Record: 1-13

Returning Starters/Key Returning Players:
seniors Ben Dunnell & Kirk Watson, junior scoring leaders Aaron Smith, Brody Geisler and Joey Keating. Other key returning junior midfielders include Jace Martinetto and Doug Jensen.   Returning starters on defense - juniors Zach Brist, Zach Grandia, and Nate Bumgarner.

Key Newcomers: freshman Goalie Jace Ugrich

Big Games/Games to See:  May 3 game against rival Duluth

Season Outlook:
Grand Rapids Defense
In the two years since the Grand Rapids lacrosse program started in 2009, they've seen tremendous growth  with 44 Varsity players and 30 middle school players in 2011.  Grand Rapids is looking to turn that success into results on the field in 2011.
The Varsity team will return 14 starters from last year.  With no seniors on the team in 2010, this years team will be seasoned and ready to compete in the MBSLA North.

Second year coach Brad Gallop believes defense will be the teams strength in 2011.  "We had no seniors on last years team, and this years team will be led by two returning seniors," said coach Gallop.  On defense three returning starters will provide the anchor this year with a couple additional underclassmen stepping up to complete the unit, according to Gallop.  Coach Gallop believes, "In our second varsity season we expect to compete in every game and we're making a .500 record our goal."
Grand Rapids will once again host the GR LAX SHOOTOUT.  This event is held on 6 fields on Sugarbrooke Golf Course at Ruttgers Sugar Lake Lodge, and will host 32 teams, including 12 Varsity teams from throughout the state and Canada.  700 lacrosse players will converge on Grand Rapids for a full weekend of lacrosse.  3 Winnipeg teams will participate, making it an exciting International event.

Grand Rapids Varsity and JV squads kick-off the season with a scrimmage against Duluth at Public Schools Stadium on Thursday April 14.

Bulldogs Drop Two More Heartbreakers to Ranked Opponents

The UMD Bulldogs can't buy a win against a solid, ranked opponent in 2011.  On Friday night, UMD dropped a close one to #17 Illinois 9-7, and on Saturday they lost to #6 Michigan State in another 2 point loss, 10-8.  While both were two point losses, the games couldn't have been more different.

Junior Midfielder Matt Madden
On Friday night, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind goals from Drake Peterson, Andrew Straus, Matt Madden and Spencer Balfanz.  They then allowed the Illini to battle back to tie the game 4-4.  From that point it appeared the Bulldogs were again taking the game back behind three unanswered goals by Alex McNamara, Pat Struzyk and Madden's second goal of the game.

Instead, the Illini took the game by the throat from that point and it appeared the Bulldogs could do nothing to stop them.  The game ended with 5 unanswered Illinois goals and a final 9-7 loss for UMD in a game that appeared to favor UMD through the first 3 periods.

Saturday's game couldn't have started any differently.  Saturday saw the #6 ranked Spartans jump out to an 8-3 lead.  Michigan State led 9-4 early in the 4th quarter when the Bulldogs stormed back behind goals from Matt Madden, Bobby Moore and Alex McNamara to close the game to one at 9-8.  From there, the Bulldogs could get no closer and the Spartans tacked on one more insurance goal to ensure the 10-8 victory.

UMD will need to secure the UMLL conference title to gain the automatic bid and entry into the MCLA national championship tournament.  Once there, they'll need to find the chemistry to pull out the close wins against the good, ranked teams they'll face in the tournament.  If they don't, they'll be leaving the dance early in 2011.

Tips for a New Lacrosse Goalie

Goalies might be the most important player on the lacrosse field.  It's important for coaches, especially youth lacrosse coaches, to cultivate goalies.  It has been said that good goaltending is worth more than a 6 goals per game attackman.

Goalie is also perhaps the most intense lacrosse position.  Goalies take both a mental and physical beating to ensure that your team wins.

Here are some goalie tips from Lacrosse-Information:

TIP #1)  Get the most protection you can afford.  If you feel safe, you can focus better on the ball and not worry about getting hurt.  Don't try to copy what your favorite college lacrosse goalie wears.  A young goalie will be getting shot on by players who don't have the accuracy Division I and professional lacrosse players have.  There will be a lot of balls coming directly at your body, not at the corners or the holes.  If you're protected adequately and feel safer, you'll play better.

TIP #2)  Know your "ready position". A proper ready position means that your top hand thumb is at eye level, and the top of the stick is level with the cross bar.  Your knees should be bent, and your feet should be shoulder width apart. Finally, in order to have extra give when you stop a shot, your hands should be about 1 1/2 feet out in front of you.

TIP #3)  Always know where the ball is at on the playing field. When the ball is in the other end of the field practice focusing on the ball at all times. Watch it go from player to player. Don't take your eyes off it at all. If you catch yourself seeing more than just the ball just try an refocus until you can stay on the ball for a length of time. At first you will notice all sorts of other things and that's o.k. Just work on trying to see only the ball moving from stick to stick. When the ball comes in your end of the field this drill will help you a ton. Also, use your good vision to look into the shooter's eyes. Nine times out of ten, the person shooting the ball is looking directly where he is going to shoot it. Use this to your advantage, and become a better goalie.

TIP #4)  Become a good passer. If you make a good save, make a good pass to your teammate.  Don't throw the ball right back to the opposition.  You can save every single shot, but if you can't pass the ball, then you won't be a good goalie.

TIP #5)  ALWAYS step to the ball.  Stepping to the ball allows you to cut off the angle a little bit more, which gives you a slight edge.  It also allows the goalie to go out and attack the bounce shots.  Rather than just waiting for a hard-to-get bounce shot to come to you, you should go to it. By attacking the shot, you are putting yourself in a better position to save a goal.

TIP #6)  BE LOUD! Let your defenders know who is cutting, where the ball is, who is passing.  Let them know everything.  During a game, talking will help out your defense.  As the goalie, you are the captain of the defense. So let them know what you see, every second of that game. Talking not only helps out your defense, but it allows you to be better prepared for the shot. Goalies who don't talk get lazy (not seeing the cutters, or even the shot!).

Here is a list of things that a goalie can say to help communicate with the defense. It is important that the defense know this list as well.
1. "Ball Side Right, Top Right, X" - Tells defense-men where the ball is on the field.
2. "Cutter" - Offensive player is cutting to the net looking for a pass.
3. "Ball down" - Any time the ball is on the ground. (Everyone should say this)
4. "Slide" - Bring an extra man to the person with the ball.
5. "Clear" - The goalie has the ball, so break out and look for a pass.
6. "Mark up" or "Number up" - Find the player you are guarding.
7. "Check" - Check sticks because there is a dangerous pass coming.

TIP #7)  Be on the lookout for cocky, loud mouthed players. These guys almost always shoot high.  When you spot a player who looks and acts better than everyone else, then odds are he is shooting up high. (take this one with a grain of salt...)

TIP #8)  Know how to handle the lacrosse ball. Whether you like it or not, sooner or later, you are going to have to come out of the net. So, when that happens, be prepared.  Make sure your cradle is good enough to resist a few stick checks.

TIP #9)  Do not be afraid of the ball!  Newer goalies often have a tendency to be afraid of the ball hitting them.  As a goalie, you want the ball to hit you, because that means that you made the save!  To get over this fear, just tell all of the players at practice to aim at the goalie and not the goal.  Eventually, and many bruises later, he will be so accustomed to lacrosse balls hitting him, that he won't be afraid any longer.  This also goes back to Tip #1 - Wear enough protection!

TIP #10)  Always keep a good, positive attitude!  If you give up a goal do not get down on yourself or your defense.  You can't take the goal off the scoreboard but you can recognize what you did wrong, practice that step or specific movement, and get the next one!  Have confidence in your abilities to stop the ball.  If you lose your confidence, your defense will soon follow.  Always believe you can save every shot.

Big Games/Games to See: Starting the season against state runner-up Orono and defending state champion St. Louis Park back to back (Friday 4/8 and Saturday 4/9)

Season Outlook
:

Brainerd Attackman Zach Brown
With several returning offensive players including Attackman Zach Brown and Midfielder Keith Haymaker, the Warriors will be relying on a potent offense to lead them in 2011.  Third year Coach Tyler Brown believes that Brainerd will have the depth and talent to be a dangerous offensive threat to any team they play in 2011.  "We look to have a lot of fire-power with the likes of Brown and Haymaker running the offense," opined Coach Brown.

While the 2011 Warriors will be a senior-heavy team, they've nearly doubled the number of players on the team from 2010 according to Coach Brown and believe that this will provide them with more depth.  Coach Brown says, "We're looking to capitalize on the experience we gained from last year and improve the talent we returned."

Coach Brown and his staff fully believe that Brainerd can compete for the conference title and progress to the state tournament. According to Coach Brown, "With the depth at key positions that we have, nothing is out of reach. We have the most dedicated, hard-working athletes, and they do not know the definition of giving up."

Look for Brainerd to be improved from 2010 and provide a stiff challenge to Duluth and St. Cloud North for the MBSLA North Division title and state tournament bid.

The Warriors kick off the season tonight at Orono High School against last season's state runner-up Orono Spartans.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.

HowToPlayLax.com - For the Beginner and More Advanced Player

Josh Sims
We recently stumbled across a new website called HowToPlayLax.com powered by Icon Lacrosse.  This website has a lot of great information and instruction for players new to lacrosse and also has an advanced section that most players who've already played the game could benefit from.  Instruction is provided by Josh Sims and Trevor Tierney, two of the games biggest stars.  On the website you'll find a Beginner section with video and text instruction on throwing, catching, scooping, cradling, shooting, positional concepts, drills and games.  The Advanced section covers all of the above concepts from a more advanced perspective and also adds specific ideas for attack, midfield, defense, goalie, stickwork drills, positional drills, training and recruiting tips.  It's a very comprehensive site that also includes a good section on Team Concepts.  For northern Minnesota lacrosse players just getting started, this is a good site to check out.

Happy April Fools Day!

The previous post about Canadian lacrosse teams seeking entry into the North Division is not true - April Fools! Not sure if that was even funny, but what the heck, eh? While there is no truth to this joke, it might be kind of fun to speculate about having Canadian lacrosse teams in a northern Minnesota division.

Several Canadian Teams Seek Entry into North Division in 2012
Word is that several canadian high school teams are seeking entry into the North Division in 2012. Authorities at several schools including Fort Frances, Thunder Bay, Atikokan and Pawitik have expressed interest in playing lacrosse in Minnesota. It's unclear how this would affect the North Division, but we'll follow this story for any new developments.
