Chargers D Eamon Mackinaw and M Zack Zierden |
In what might be the best placing for a Duluth area lacrosse team at any level in any lacrosse event, the 7/8 Chargers team won the 3rd place game against St. Louis Park 4-0 yesterday to bring home a 3rd place medal. It was a fun weekend of lacrosse for the young Chargers in the 80 degree heat of Champlin, MN. With a slim roster of only 12 players on Saturday and 13 on Sunday, the Chargers proved their mettle and withstood the heat and other teams to finish the weekend with a 3-1-1 record.
Saturday morning the Chargers took the field against Centennial and used balanced scoring to come away with an 8-1 victory. In the second game of the day, the Chargers battled Wayzata to come away with a hard fought 3-2 win. After two games in the 80 degree heat, the Chargers came out for the 3rd game and battled St. Louis Park to a 5-5 tie to end the day with a 2-0-1 record and the #1 seed in pool B.

Treven Smalley and Nick Funk battling for a ground ball |
On Sunday morning, the young Chargers lost the ground ball battle they won all day on Saturday and took too many penalties in a close 4-3 loss to Owatonna, just missing out on the championship game. In the 3rd place game, the Chargers looked determined and came back to win the ground ball battle, executed some nice passing, and played great defense and beat St. Louis Park 4-0 to take 3rd place in the tournament. A very good Eden Prairie team defeated Owatonna 8-3 in the championship game to take 1st place.
Congratulations to the Chargers 7/8 team and to all of the northern Minnesota teams on successful seasons.
