Next Up: Bulldogs vs. Gophers
Next Up: Bulldogs vs. Gophers
Duluth, MN – The rivalry is set to continue this upcoming weekend. After a strong start to the 2012 season, the UMD Bulldogs now look ahead to their next game against the University of Minnesota Gophers.
“Though we beat the Gophers in the UMLC championship game last year, the loss to them at home (in Duluth) still leaves a very sour taste in our mouths. It’s a feeling we will surely not forget entering Saturday’s game,” said senior captain #17 Matt Madden.
These two teams matched up twice in the 2011 lacrosse season, and it’s sure to be a battle to the finish between the Bulldogs and the Gophers.
“There’s always a rivalry between these two teams. If there’s one thing I can say about the Gophers, it’s they always come ready to compete and give our guys a challenge,” said head coach Frank Clark.
During the regular season, the Gophers edged out the Bulldogs 8-7 in overtime on Bulldog territory. But when they played again in the 2011 UMLC playoffs, the Bulldogs reigned superior with a final score of 11-6.
“This is one game everybody marks on their calendars. I have no doubt it will be a great afternoon of lacrosse from both teams,” said Clark.
In 2011, the Gophers finished their season with a divisional UMLC record of 4-1, and an overall record of 6-6. The Golden Gophers made it to the second round of the 2011 UMLC playoffs, but saw their season end when they matched up against the Bulldogs and lost.
“We need to jump on every opportunity and get things going in our favor early like the past weekend’s match-ups will be key,” said Clark.
The rivalry match-up will take place on Saturday, February 25 at the University of Minnesota Bubble Stadium in Minneapolis. The game starts at noon.
“Preparation, focus and execution will be the keys for us to be successful this weekend. It should be a very exciting game,” said Sam Litman, the Bulldogs assistant head coach.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs took on the Marquette University club lacrosse team at the Vadnais Dome in White Bear Lake, MN and defeated them handily, 17-3. Matt Murphy and Neal Pester added two goals, while Shayne Thomas added a goal and an assist, and Julian Chamleunsouk and Tyler Lorinser added a goal apiece. The Bulldogs faced Iowa State in the second game on Sunday. This game was even more lopsided than the first as the Bulldogs crushed the Cyclones 23-3. Kevin Gaydos started the scoring marathon with the first 3 goals of the game. Gaydos would lead all scorers with 6 goals on the day. Alex McNamara put in 4 goals and added an assist while Tyler Lorinser also chipped in with 4 goals. Neal Pester was the primary assist man contributing 4 assists and also adding a goal. Matt Murphy scored 2 goals and added 2 assists while Justin Vossen and Shayne Thomas each added a goal and had 2 assists. Drake Peterson scored 1 goal and added 1 assist and Ben Blaeser, Matt Madden, and Stanley Drutowski each added a goal. Once again, the goalies shared time in goal giving up only 3 goals.
It was a solid opening weekend for the Bulldogs. Next Saturday the Bulldogs take on in-state rival University of Minnesota in a re-match of the UMLL title game from a year ago. The game will be played at the University of Minnesota sports bubble and might be the most important early season UMLL test the 'dogs have had in recent years. Next weeks game should be a great indicator of who has the inside track for the UMLL title in 2012.

Bulldogs Lose Opening Round Game to Colorado State
The UMD Bulldogs lost their opening round MCLA Championship Tournament game to Colorado State 10-6. With the loss, the Bulldogs are eliminated from the MCLA Tournament and will look towards 2012.
Game report from CSU Lacrosse:
Commerce City, COLO – The 2nd seeded Colorado State Rams used patient offense and suffocating defense to get past 15th seed Minnesota-Duluth in the first round of the MCLA national tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. CSU led 5-2 at the half and outscored Duluth 5-4 in the final thirty minutes to secure the 10-6 win and advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Duluth took the lead 2-1 early in the 1st Quarter. After being tied up 2-2 after one quarter of play, the Rams dominated the time of possession in the second quarter, taking 15 shots to UMD’s two and scoring three goals while holding the Bulldogs scoreless. The Rams were led by attackmen Cooper Kehoe and Austin Fisher, each contributing three points. Senior Garrett Fugier cashed in on two scoring opportunities as well for the Rams, who defeated UMD for the second straight time after falling to the Bulldogs in 2009.
“This game was just about what I thought it would be,” said CSU head coach Alex Smith. “They are a very good defensive team and their goalie played great. We had several looks that would have been goals against most other goalies and the game could have been a little more comfortable.”
Joey Slattery made 10 saves in cage for Duluth while Andy Flax made six for CSU. The Rams also enjoyed an advantage at the face-off ‘x,’ where they went 12/20 on the afternoon.
“We did some good things today,” said Smith. “I thought our six on six offense did its job and I was happy for our man-up unit to break out a little bit. Our defense held it together really nicely and we just kind of went about our business today. Tomorrow is going to be a different story against a very talented Boston College team. We are going to have to be at our best to advance.”
The Rams victory over Duluth is the 11th time in the last 13 years that CSU has made the quarterfinal round. Last year, they were bounced by 10th seeded Simon Fraser and will find themselves in a similar position this year against Boston College, also a #10 seed.
BC advanced to the quarters with an emotional 10-9 win over 7th seeded Colorado. CSU defeated Boston College 10-7 in the MCLA first round in 2010. The two teams have played three times since 2008, with CSU sweeping the series, but all the games were within three goals. Face-off at Dick’s Park is at 4:00pm MST on Wednesday.

Bulldogs Lose Shocker to Gophers; Beat Sonoma State
The UMD Bulldogs will now have to win the UMLL Conference tournament for a chance to play in the MCLA National Championship Tournament in Denver after losing in overtime to conference rival University of Minnesota on April 15, 8-7. It was a miserable night for lacrosse at Griggs Stadium in Duluth with high winds and frigid temperatures. UMD dropped another close game, losing by 1 goal in overtime to an improving University of Minnesota team.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs found a little redemption, beating a solid Sonoma State (6-6) team 8-2. The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a disappointing 5-7 record.
UMD will enter the April 29-May 1 UMLL tournament as the #2 seed. Their first tournament game will be April 30 at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the St. Cloud State/MSU-Mankato game. The UMLL championship game will take place on Sunday May 1 at 4:30 p.m.

Bulldogs Drop Two More Heartbreakers to Ranked Opponents
The UMD Bulldogs can't buy a win against a solid, ranked opponent in 2011. On Friday night, UMD dropped a close one to #17 Illinois 9-7, and on Saturday they lost to #6 Michigan State in another 2 point loss, 10-8. While both were two point losses, the games couldn't have been more different.
On Friday night, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind goals from Drake Peterson, Andrew Straus, Matt Madden and Spencer Balfanz. They then allowed the Illini to battle back to tie the game 4-4. From that point it appeared the Bulldogs were again taking the game back behind three unanswered goals by Alex McNamara, Pat Struzyk and Madden's second goal of the game.
Instead, the Illini took the game by the throat from that point and it appeared the Bulldogs could do nothing to stop them. The game ended with 5 unanswered Illinois goals and a final 9-7 loss for UMD in a game that appeared to favor UMD through the first 3 periods.
Saturday's game couldn't have started any differently. Saturday saw the #6 ranked Spartans jump out to an 8-3 lead. Michigan State led 9-4 early in the 4th quarter when the Bulldogs stormed back behind goals from Matt Madden, Bobby Moore and Alex McNamara to close the game to one at 9-8. From there, the Bulldogs could get no closer and the Spartans tacked on one more insurance goal to ensure the 10-8 victory.
UMD will need to secure the UMLL conference title to gain the automatic bid and entry into the MCLA national championship tournament. Once there, they'll need to find the chemistry to pull out the close wins against the good, ranked teams they'll face in the tournament. If they don't, they'll be leaving the dance early in 2011.

That's as close as the Bulldogs would get and they dropped their 4th of the season 9-6 to a very good Colorado team.

The No. 4 BYU Cougars let a five goal lead slip away but were able to get the win against No. 8 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night in Provo, Utah.
“One of our goals coming into the game was to be able to have four full quarters,” said BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck. “We didn’t accomplish that tonight. We had a great first half and we got into the second half and honestly I think that some of this a little reminiscent of other games in the past. We felt since we were up by 5 goals at the half that we were on the same path as our other games.”
BYU (6-0) jumped out to an early two goal lead before Minn-Duluth (2-1, 2-0) pulled one back midway through the first quarter. BYU kept gaining momentum and dominated the face-offs allowing them to notch two more goals to Minn-Duluths one goal in the first quarter.
BYU went on a three goal run in the second quarter and didn’t allow Minn-Duluth to score, giving the Cougars a 7-2 lead going into halftime.
Both teams traded goals before Minn-Duluth went on a three goal run late in the third quarter. Minn-Duluth then scored four goals to BYU’s one goal in the fourth to tie the game at 10 with 1:20 remaining.
Minn-Duluth won the ensuing face-off and took it down into their zone but gave up a quick turnover. BYU successfully cleared and BYU Senior Midfielder Tyler Monteath was able to get a goal with 53 seconds remaining, giving BYU a one goal lead.
Minn-Duluth won the face-off and took it into their zone and called a timeout. After the timeout, the Bulldogs tried to run a play but the BYU defense didn’t give up any ground. With about 5 seconds remaining, Minn-Duluth was forced to take a bad shot which trickled out of bounds with 2 seconds left in the game. Minn-Duluth called a timeout to setup one last play. When the whistle blew, Minn-Duluth threw a lob pass into the middle of the field and caught it, but it was too slow as time had run out, sealing a BYU victory.

Bulldog coach Frank Clark had this to say; “BYU is a great team and we are looking forward to the challenge that they will present. In the past we have had some very competitive match ups and we don’t expect this to be any different. They are well coached and will have played some very good teams already at that point in the season” Coach Litman had this to say about Utah: “Utah is a very strong program with a lot of talent on both sides of the field. Every time we’ve played against one another it has been a battle. I expect the same from Coach Morris and his team in this game.”

March 19th UMD-Colorado Game to be Streamed Live
CollegeLAX will be offering live video streaming of the March 19th game between the UMD Bulldogs and Colorado Buffalo in Lake Oswego, OR.
In the 2009 Quarter Finals of the MCLA National Tournament, Colorado stole a 13-10 victory. In 2010, the Bulldogs traveled to Boulder, Colorado and escaped with an 11-10 win over the Buffaloes.
“The Bulldogs came into Boulder last year and handed us a close loss right after we beat Michigan,” said Colorado Head Coach Mike Ryder. “We have a bitter taste from that loss and will be looking to avenge them this year. No doubt they will be a top team as this season unfolds.”
The match-up between these two teams is quickly becoming a great rivalry.
“The last two games we’ve played against them have been very competitive games,” said Minnesota-Duluth Head Coach Frank Clark. “We’re looking forward to the challenge and we think they’re one of the top tier teams out there. It will be a good test to see where we are at that point.”
CollegeLAX will provide the ultimate platform for the game to be seen. “The chance to be live streamed online through CollegeLAX says a lot about where the MCLA is going,” said Ryder.
“It’s a great opportunity,” said Clark. “The more lacrosse that’s out there, the better. It will help grow the game and grow the MCLA brand, which I think is very important."
The game between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on March 19, 2011, will be streamed live on www.collegelax.us
